“What?” you ask? Make a cake in a microwave? You can’t do that!

Oh, yes. Yes, you can. I never thought microwaves were used for anything other than heating frozen meals or making popcorn. It’s actually greater than you think it is. The microwave is pretty bomb at satisfying your late-night chocolate cake cravings.

Check it out. This is a chocolate cake recipe in a mug that takes no more than five minutes. It’ll take you longer to gather the ingredients than to cook the cake. I first learned of the microwave chocolate cake recipe when one of my college roommates received an email that simply said, “Try this.” The email listed some ingredients with 3 steps: mix well, microwave for 60-75 seconds, and eat. What a delicious joke, right? It was satisfying and definitely hilarious.

Keep this recipe for your late-night sweets cravings. It’ll be handy during midterms and finals seasons. Add anything you want to the batter, like chopped nuts, dried fruit, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips…basically anything that comes in small pieces!

Here’s what you need:

Some all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking soda, sugar, vanilla extract, milk, and canola oil. It’s like making an Easy-Bake cake!… Except not… since your ingredients didn’t come from a pouch that you can only buy from Toys”R”Us.

Gently dump your dry ingredients in a large mug. Make sure it’s a cute mug.

Mix, mix, mix.

Add the wet ingredientes, por favor.

And the vanilla extract. For a pop of flavor, ya know?

Mix it all around.

Til it looks like that. Like batter. Yes, this is like a real chocolate cake batter.

Now, don’t forget some chocolate chips. Or nuts. Or whatever. Heck, if I had mini marshmallows, I’d dump some on top. How about peanut butter?! Can somebody please try that? Stir it in if you want. I’m just gonna keep the chips floating on top.

Depending on how strong your microwave is, cook the cake for about 2 minutes. No more than 2 1/2 minutes, though!

Ta-da. Looks like actual cake, huh? Now dust some powdered sugar over the top to make it look like the real deal.

Serve with some ice cream if you have any!
