Easy Homemade Gravy

Gravies are foolproof and quick to make. They are the quintessential sauce when you’re eating a meal with a delicious main dish such as chicken breast, turkey, or meatloaf. The most basic gravy only has three ingredients: butter, flour, and stock/broth. To that you can add any flavors, such as pepper, sage, and thyme. You can add some heavy cream for an even richer gravy. If you’re making a basic Thanksgiving gravy, I advise adding a little poultry seasoning to create a festive flavor.

Here’s what you need:

Unsalted butter, all-purpose flour, and chicken broth. And poultry seasoning, if you’re making this for Thanksgiving.

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and then add the flour. Make sure your pan isn’t too hot or the butter will burn. I almost burned my butter! Once the paste forms, cook it for about 1 minute to take out some of that flour-y taste.

Add in all the broth and whisk around to dissolve all the flour. Bring the gravy to a simmer and allow the gravy to thicken to a gravy-like thick consistency. That’ll take at least 5 minutes.

Reduce the heat to a simmer and add the poultry seasoning. Check if it needs salt or pepper. Adjust according to your taste.

Now that’s what I call simple! Pour this over mashed potatoes, vegetables, etc. etc.
